The game that I decided to play for this assignment is called Pirates, Vikings, and Knights II, also known as PVK2. I decided to choose this game to play because my brother always talks about it. I was visiting him the other weekend and he stayed up playing Pirates, Vikings, and Knights II until four o’clock in the morning because of how addicted he is. I really enjoyed playing this game and took note of the different mechanics were used in this game.
PVK2 is a first person shooter game. That means that from the player’s point of view, you are the shooter. Therefore, you only see your hand and the gun, typically. This game is a multiplayer game. PVK2 is a game based on past ages where pirates, vikings, and knights fight each other. You as the player chose a team to play on. I chose to play on the pirates’ team. Once the game begins you are put into a first person shooter scenario. You as the player run around until you come across a threat and then you attack. You try and kill the vikings and the knights if you are playing on the pirates’ team. Below are the three different icons for the pirates, vikings, and knights.
Pirates, Vikings, and Knights II is strictly a computer game because of how many keys and such you need to use to play the game efficiently. the ‘W’ key is used to move forward; the “S” key is used to move backward; the “A” key is used to move left; and the “D” key is used to move right. The Space Bar is used to jump. The mouse is used to turn your player so you have a different view if wanted. You click the mouse to use your weapon. As you run around the game and kill people, you also have to collect food, water, other weapons, etc. The goal of the game is to get the other team’s treasure. As you collect treasure time goes faster and faster. The team who has the most amount of treasure when the clock runs out, wins the game. Most other first person shooter games have the same mechanics as this one. Each team has approximately ten people on each team if the maximum amount of people are playing. The game that I played in only had twenty-five people playing at that current time. My brother and I joined the same game and the same team so we were able to go through the game together. While we were playing, we were also Face Timing so we were able to talk about the game and he was telling me how to do different things and giving me directions.
There are some other mechanics that are used a lot that are a little bit more complex. Such as switching your weapons. You switch your weapon by pressing “1, 2 or 3” and then clicking. You as the player can also block. You can block by right clicking the mouse and then aim for where you want to block by using the arrows.
PVKII has different maps you can play on such as Medieval Castles, European Villages, Winter Landscapes, Grassy Plains, Sea Vessels, Catacombs, Sea Ports, etc. You do not have to advance from map to map you can simply just choose which one you would like to play. There are also many players that you can choose to be. Below, I have each character pictured.
However, a first person shooter game played on the computer has totally different mechanics than a first person shooter game played on a console such as X-Box or PlayStation. If this game were played on a game console the thumb cursors would be used to move your player around just like the mouse is used while playing on the computer. The buttons would be used for the same thing that the keys on a computer are used for. Therefore, the mechanics of the game would also be similar if the game was not only played on a computer, but also played on a game console.
In conclusion, I am happy I decided to choose a more difficult game that is not the typical game I would choose to play. I feel more educated on popular games in today’s society. Although, I do not typically enjoy first person shooter games, this one was not too bad because it was more unrealistic. Due to the scenery being more medieval and from a different age, the shooting is not as bad as it would be if I were playing a video game such as Grand Theft Auto. I unfortunately do not enjoy this game to the point that I would play it as consistently as my brother does. Overall this video game experience was a great experience. Maybe one day I will play Pirates, Vikings, and Knights II, again.
Below is a trailer for Pirates, Vikings, and Knights II.
